Directions To Fort HowesUPDATED DIRECTIONS AS OF JUNE 4, 2011 FROM BROADUS At the "Y" on the west side of Broadus (Highway 59 north to Miles City and Highway 212 west towards Ashland). You will see a "Road Closed" sign blocking your way west on Highway 212. Go around the sign and follow the directions below. From Broadus go west on HWY 212 for about 44 miles. You will see a turn off to the south (left) marked HWY 484, Otter Creek Road and Fort Howes; this is the only paved road taking off to the left. Take this road until the pavement ends (about 21 miles), and then go an additional 3/4 mile on the gravel to the ride site on the left hand side of the road. FROM I-90 AT CROW AGENCY (BATTLE OF THE LITTLE BIG HORN BATTLEFIELD EXIT) You may see signs indicating that the road is closed to local traffic only. You are allowed to continue onto Lame Deer. At the 4-way stop at Lame Deer (intersection of Highway 39 to Colstrip to the left and Cheyenne Ave (Carl Bement Memorial Highway) to the right AND Highway 212) you cannot continue straight ahead as that road is CLOSED. You will need to turn right (south) towards Birney. Travel approximately 20 miles. There is a 'makeshift' sign indicating that you need to turn left to go to Ashland (honestly it is a plywood sign with spray paint). Turn left (north) onto the South Tongue River Road and go approximately 16.5. This will lead you back towards Ashland. At the stop sign turn right (east) and continue into Ashland. Follow the directions below. Keep in mind that this is OPEN RANGE - IE you may (more than likely WILL) see livestock (horses, cattle...) on the Highways, especially on the Reservation. Even though there are fences that are intended to keep them off the highways, they often have open gates or aren't in good enough condition to keep livestock in. From Ashland go east on HWY 212 for about 5 miles; you will go down a steep hill and at the bottom of the hill will be a paved road taking off to the south (right). This is HWY 484; you will also see a sign that says Otter Creek Road and Fort Howes. Take this road until the pavement ends (about 21 miles), and then go an additional 3/4 mile on the gravel to the ride site on the left hand side of the road.
